At Living Hope we have a saying: “It’s better to build a whole child than mend a broken person.” This truth is at the heart of our Family Strengthening Programme.
Our Family Strengthening Programme equips children and their families to better provide for and care for each other. The family-strengthening approach is a proven way to prevent social issues such as child abuse, improve family relationships, teach parenting skills, and grow a family’s overall life skills and resilience. Our team is working to build a solid foundation for a child’s life. What might seem like a straight path to a successful future is, in reality, an arduous journey when faced with unplanned pregnancy, poor housing and sanitation, unemployment, health challenges, food insecurity, gangsterism, substance abuse, and domestic violence. These are the circumstances that families in our local communities face daily in their jobs, schools, and communities where they live. During the various lockdown levels of COVID-19, the rate of domestic violence increased dramatically in South Africa, and this crippling situation has heavily impacted our women and children.
The Family Strengthening Programme responds as a need arises and works with many of our local networking partners, ensuring that each family can access what they need to thrive. Something as small as a backpack filled and ready with school supplies means a greater chance of educational success for a young child starting school. Or perhaps providing basic hygiene supplies, such as feminine hygiene products, keeps a girl child in school until graduation. In partnership with the local hospital, our team can counsel mothers through pregnancy and prepare them with prenatal education and support, often addressing mental health issues as well. Getting anywhere without a birth certificate or identity document is complex – our social worker guides people in obtaining these crucial documents.
Our Early Intervention Drug Programme is a school-based education and mentoring programme aimed at preventing drug use initiation and escalation into drug addiction in children. Intervening early assists with establishing healthy coping skills, instilling a strong sense of confidence and self-worth, increasing social skills, re-building familial connections, and teaching problem-solving skills. We aim to minimize the need or want to use drugs or alcohol and prevent r other problem behaviours among youth linked to drug abuse, including withdrawal from school, violent behavior, and general delinquency.
