Inside Mountain View
Adjacent to Ocean View is the informal settlement of Mountain View where about twenty families were forcefully moved from an illegal squatter camp near Fish Hoek nearly 20 years ago. The site was a former state park type facility, designed for week-end and short-term use. Over 100 families now compete each day for the limited facilities designed for “camping” use, and the same issues of drugs, gangs, etc that is rampant in Ocean View work against those who want a better life. Promises still remain today as they have since the beginning for safe and secure housing, and the residents are hopeful that this will finally be the year for a new home.
